The Canada-Israel Industrial R&D Foundation (CIIRDF) promotes, stimulates and invests in collaborative research and development between companies in Canada and Israel, with a focus on the commercialization of new technologies. Established in 1994 under a formal treaty between the Governments of Canada and Israel, CIIRDF is connected institutionally with the Israel Innovation Authority, and funds projects cross many scientific disciplines, technologies and industrial sectors. These include biotechnology, agriculture, information and communications technologies, automotive, natural resource management, public safety and aerospace. CIIRDF funds up to 50% of eligible R&D expenses, and does not take any equity whatsoever.
The foundation adds value and technological capacity to all partners, and enables the commercialization of new products and services. To achieve these objectives, CIIRDF:
- Promotes the benefits of Canada-Israel R&D collaboration;
- Offers a matchmaking service that brings together Canadian and Israeli companies seeking R&D partners; and
- Provides funding in support of bilateral R&D projects with strong science, and the best potential to add commercial value to both companies.
CIIRDF has financed more than 120 collaborative R&D projects that have contributed to the joint development and sale of more than 60 new global products. This has generated between $300 to $500 million in economic value for Canadian and Israeli companies over the past decade.
